Who is Web mapping?
Who is Web mapping?
Traditional methods of publishing map documents still dominate the Nigerian GIS landscape. This is basically hinged on the fact that access to training and education in the production of web maps is just gaining ground on the continent.
Till recent, the buzz world was Digital maps. Well, the world has moved on guys!!
Since 2013, web based javascript libraries such as Leaflet, OpenLayers and their extensions like Mapbox JS and Cartodb JS introduced the ability to use coded scripts to draw maps with many functionalities into a HTML page. Proprietary software companies have since caught up and developed their own web mapping platforms such as Esri ArcGIS online and Quantum's QGIS Cloud.
Drawing and hosting a map on an internet server gives the data you share all the dynamic abilities that the modern web browser offers. Knowing how to create and publish web enabled maps is essential for the development of GIS based mapping applications and compilation of large volumes of geodata. Web mapping applications now dominate the commercial GIS landscape and importantly, there is no map application without someone drawing the map first!!!.
Web maps give us and our work an instant worldwide visibility, allow different users situated at seperate locations and at different times to share, update and edit maps and their features.Web maps through their use in several modern commercial applications have come to stay as the defacto web design UI for many developers.
