As mapsnigeriainitiative closes for this year, we thought to share three of the challenges of creating web maps with you guys.
Making it display on as many types of browsers as possible
Web maps are for public consumption and your audience should be able to see and interact with the map whether they use firefox, chrome, opera or the much dreaded internet explorer. Getting the web map to display accurately on any web browser is a major challenge.
Constant Software Updates
HTML, CSS, javascript and a variety of other softwares used for making the web maps get updated often. Keeping up with these updates is like 'keeping up with the Kardashians'. GIS dataset formats, logos, icons and software library versions on the web maps need to be updated and revised from time to time. Imagine a scenario where a long term client decides to switch proprietary product and expects the web map to look the same way as it did before.
Network Availability and Data speed
Oftentimes, data network coverage and data speeds are just above the average in most parts of the country. Disseminating any information over the internet, especially as maps which tend to have large mbs can be a trying task. Making sure the web map is well packaged so it allows the end users' to manage data effectively is a top priority.
Happy holidays to you all and a happy new year in advance. Cheers
